Skin Care 101 For Men Part I

Dr. Lee Robinson, Facial Cosmetic Surgeon located in Lake Oswego Oregon and Medical Director of Oswego Spa & Laser wants men to realize the importance of good facial skin care. The first thing people notice about you is your face! Healthy skin is the most important element of a great looking face. Healthy younger looking skin is easy to achieve and we can show you available options. Here are a few facts to help you understand why it is important to take good care of your facial skin.
Thicker Skin: Facial skin is thicker for men than women. Higher levels of testosterone in the blood create thicker dermis and epidermis skin layers which contain more elastin and collagen. This means a man’s resistance to aging skin (fine lines, wrinkles, skin laxity and large pores) is higher than a woman’s.
Oilier Skin: With thicker facial skin, men also have more active oil-producing sebaceous glands (sebum) that continue producing oil late into life (women decrease oil production about 20 years sooner than men). These natural oils are waterproof and protect the skin to keep it soft, smooth and supple.
Coarser, Thicker Hair: Men have coarse, thick hair on their faces, requiring constant facial shaving resulting in a higher risk of irritation and ingrown hairs.
Larger Pores: Pumping out natural oils and sprouting hair, men’s pores are larger than a women’s, which increases the risk of having clogged pores and acne blemish outbreaks.
Lifestyles: Men tend to spend more time outside causing frequent expose to the sun and environmental pollutants.
