Sclerotherapy

Spring is the time of year when we start assessing our legs to see if they are “shorts weather” ready. The typical leg complaints are shape, size, color and noticeable veins. Although we cannot alter the shape or size at Oswego Spa & Laser, we can treat and eliminate unsightly veins and recommend a great, sunless tanner to get you headed in the right direction.

The first thing to consider is whether the vessels are superficial in nature or is there an underlying vascular issue. The classifications are divided into large, bulging varicose veins, bluish feeder/reticular veins and spider veins. At Oswego Spa and Laser we specialize in the treatment of the small reticular veins using Sclerotherapy injections as well as the small to moderate spider veins using targeted laser therapies.

Sclerotherapy

Sclerotherapy is a non-surgical treatment using injections to eliminate the appearance of cosmetic spider veins and small varicose veins of the legs.

First let’s talk about Sclerotherapy. By definition, Sclerotherapy is a nonsurgical treatment that involves injecting a medical grade solution into the vein, causing the lining of the vein wall to swell, stick together and ultimately seal shut. Once sealed, the flow of blood is stopped and scar tissue develops. Blood is then forced through healthier veins and the treated vein is absorbed. If a vein is large enough to be injected, this method is the most effective and efficient manner of treatment with most patients experiencing a 50-80% improvement.

Once the large reticular vessels and larger spider veins are treated with Sclerotherapy, the moderate to small spider veins can then be treated with a laser. The laser works by generating an intense beam of light that selectively heats up the hemoglobin in the red blood cells causing the destruction of the vein wall. Immediately you will see a darkening accompanied by slight swelling along the length of the vessels.

With both procedures you should avoid intense exercise for 24 to 72 hours, walking is encouraged. Compression stockings or wraps should be worn depending on the size of the veins treated. Easy to follow instructions are provided during the consultation to help you plan your exercise around the treatments, greatly maximizing the end results.

Summer is just around the corner so it’s not too early to get started on healthier and more attractive “shorts worthy” legs. Call us today at Oswego Spa and Laser to set up your complimentary consultation.
