Omaha, Neb. — Botox users looking to enhance their skin appearance may want to try a new combination of two topical skin treatments, Medical News Today reports.

A new study, co-authored by Omaha dermatologist Joel Schlessinger,M.D., suggests that a specifically designed 4% Hydroquinone skincare system in combination with Tretinoin (Retin-A) further enhances improvements in skin appearance attained with OnabotulinumtoxinA (Botox, Allergan). Applying the Hydroquinone system plus Tetinoin may offer multiple clinical benefits over standard skincare, including significantly milder fine lines/wrinkles and Hyperpigmentation, according to the research.

In the multi-center, randomized study, 61 patients who had received upper facial Botox treatment were randomly assigned to use either the Hydroquinone system (cleanser, toner, proprietary 4% Hydroquinone, exfoliant and sunscreen) plus 0.05% Tretinoin cream, or a standard regimen (cleanser, moisturizer and sunscreen) for 120 days. Outcomes were assessed by investigators and through a patient questionnaire.

Compared with standard skincare, the Hydroquinone system plus Tretinoin resulted in significantly milder fine lines/wrinkles and Hyperpigmentation at days 30, 90 and 120 and in significantly superior overall ratings for each of nine patient assessments at days 90 and 120. More than 85 % of the patients in the Hydroquinone system plus Tretinoin group said their treatment had further enhanced Botox-attained improvements, as compared with 8% of the standard skincare group. Both regimens were generally well tolerated.

Medical News Today quotes Dr. Schlessinger as saying, The new Hydroquinone system is not only effective, it is also easy for patients to use, increasing the likelihood that they will be able to get maximum benefits. Most importantly, using the system in combination with Tretinoin significantly improved how patients perceived themselves, which is the ultimate goal of any aesthetic treatment.

The study appears in the July issue of Aesthetic Surgery Journal.

Known in medical terms as axillary hyperhidrosis, the condition affects more than a million people in the U.S. People with this condition, sweat up to four times more than normal in order to maintain a normal body temperature.

People with the disorder often suffer from difficulty in social situations and say it significantly interferes with their daily activities.

“These long-term data demonstrate that Botox for severe primary axillary hyperhidrosis over a two-year period is a safe and effective therapeutic option for patients who otherwise struggle with substantial impairment,” says researcher Dee Anna Glaser, MD, professor of dermatology and vice chairman of dermatology at Saint Louis University School of Medicine, in a news release.

The FDA approved Botox for this treatment in July of 2004 and it is slowly growing in popularity, especially in hot climates. The treatments take about 30 minutes and there is minimal discomfort during the injection process. The number of units necessary depends on the size of the individual however the average is 100 units (50 units per underarm). Cost range is $900- $1500 per session.

The first 20 unemployed qualifying people actively looking for a job were selected to participate. Each participant was asked to come dressed as they would for a job interview, bring a current resume´ and agree to come back in 3 months for a follow-up review.

Dr. Lee Robinson started the event with a BOTOX® information presentation, how it works and what a Botox treatment will do. He agreed to an actual BOTOX® injection demonstration with our nurse Deb-ee Jones performing glabella injections.

Barbara Barde, President of Barde Career Solutions provided information on the three “P’s” of job interviewing, Preparation, Preparation, Preparation. All attendees learned phone interview tips, body language during an interview and how to prepare for a particular job interview.

Valerie Berset-Price, President of Valerie Antoinette, provided valuable information on the importance of the “first impression”. How to dress for your body type, proper fitting attire and color, acceptable accessories, shoe condition, grooming, hair style and perfume were just a few of the topics she covered.

Dorothy Ryan, Esthetician for Oswego Spa & Laser, talked about the dos and don’ts of proper job interview make-up application. From lip gloss and foundation to well groomed eyebrows, she presented “eye opening” information.

Following the presentations each attendee was treated to individual sessions with Barbara Barde, Valerie Berset-Price and Dorothy Ryan, Deb-ee Jones and Staci Bronson. Barbara provided resume’ critique and advice along with overall job placement information.

Valerie Berset-Price evaluated the attire of each participant to include information on proper fit, color and style. Dorothy Ryan provided make-up color analysis and make up application. Deb-ee Jones, RN and Staci Bronson, RN injected Botox where needed for each attendee.

The day started at 9:00 and wrapped up around 3:00 and during this time it was great to see the bonding and comradery between these wonderful women who had never met. I saw women exchanging phone numbers and email addresses as well as sharing informational websites. I was humbled by their stories and honored that we could provide information that will help them move onto employment and a good feeling about themselves.

Expressions of thanks and gratitude were abound! I am including a few notes that we have received so far. Due to the overwhelming interest and success of this event we look forward to offering it again in 2011!
