Winter means your skin is going to dry out fast — be prepared

Keep a styled haircut stylish by substituting a hood for a hat.

Avoid hot showers and add a humidifier to your home.

It’s freezing outside. But it’s hot as hell inside. Translation: the perfect storm for dandruff-ridden scalp, lips with hanging chads and skin so dry you could scratch a legible cry for help on it. So what’s the well-groomed guy to do in the dead of winter? Hunker down, gentlemen. It’s time to revamp your routine with a little help from our seasonally inspired list of dos and don’ts.

Do – Exfoliate

Despite the frigid temps, your skin still needs to be exfoliated. A basic face and body cleanser with finely ground grit will slough off old skin cells and reveal new, moisture-rich ones. Scrub down two to three times a week (irregularity can end up just stressing your skin out) and follow with a healthy dose of moisturizer to get your skin through winter’s darkest days.

Don’t – Take Scorching Showers

A long, hot shower to warm you up from the frigid temps can be tempting, but it’s also the quickest way to rob your skin of moisture. Steam created by the shower signals pores to open and release precious water from the body, leaving behind dry, itchy skin and dandruff on the scalp. A seemingly innocent respite from the cold? Perhaps not. So, limit yourself to six minutes, set the temp to somewhere around lukewarm and finish with a cold rinse on your head for flake-free hair.

Do – Use a Hooded Jacket

Whether it’s a zip-up, a pull-over or attached to your go-to winter gear, use a hood to protect your head from the elements. You’ll be targeting your body’s primary point of heat loss while caring for your perfectly positioned coif. You know, the kind that could be bulldozed down by stuffing it into a head-hugging ski hat.

Don’t – Go Grizzly

Just because the mercury has taken a dive doesn’t mean you should insulate yourself with extra layers of locks and a grotty beard. Stick to regularly scheduled programming — a shave about every three days and a haircut at least every four weeks — and let your down coat do the warming.

Do – Avoid Processed Food

After a month of holiday dinner table gorging and office snacking, your body could use a rest. All those fatty foods and sweets can result in dull, tired-looking skin. Integrate lean proteins like fish with omega-3 acids into your diet. Your skin and that obligatory New Year’s weight-loss resolution will thank you.

Don’t – Lick Lips

Contrary to instinct, quenching your thirsty lips with saliva will only make matters worse. Grease them up (and regrease them throughout the day) with an oil-based balm in order to stave off cracks, cuts and those unsightly hanging chads.

Do – Use A Humidifier

Indoor heating systems and space heaters certainly take the chill out of the air. But they suck the moisture out of it, which can leave your skin parched and itchy. Rather than bathing in body cream, treat the problem at its source by investing in a humidifier. Placing a few throughout your living space will help restore water to the air and to your skin.

Don’t – Use Understated Aromas

Light fragrances are too flimsy for the cold. Take advantage of the season by swapping your citrusy cologne for something a bit bolder. Spicy, woody ones with base notes of tobacco, oak, vetiver, and patchouli are your best bests for weathering the winter months in scented style.

Winter Solace

Seeking refuge from the cold only to get blasted with harsh heat indoors can spell epidermal disaster. But with these dos and don’ts for winterizing your regimen, it doesn’t have to.

We all know the importance of daily sunscreen to protect our skin from harmful sun rays. With summer around the corner (we hope) we want to review your options and importance of proper sun protection for your children and infants!

Sunburn can develop within 15 minutes of sun exposure, but the redness and discomfort may not be noticed immediately, in fact, it sometimes is not noticed until hours later. Repeated sunburns can lead to skin cancer.

Sunburn Signs & Symptoms

Mild: Skin redness and warmth, pain, and itchiness.
Severe: Skin redness & blistering	Pain & tingling, swelling, nausea, headache, fever & chills, dizziness.

What To Do If You Think You Have A Sunburn

Remove child from the sun immediately.

Place the child in a cool (not cold) shower or bath or apply a cool compress.

Give extra fluids for the next 2 to 3 days.

Ibuprofen or acetamininophen (as directed) may be given to relieve pain.

Aloe gel or moisturizing cream may be applied to provide comfort.

Cover all sunburned areas until healed when going outside.

How To Prevent Sunburns

Minimize summer sun exposure between 10am and 4pm.

Dress children in protective clothing, sunglasses and a hat.

UPF 50+ clothing, swimwear, hats and sunglasses and even blankets are now available!

Use sunscreen that provides UVB & UVA protection with a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 15.

Apply sunscreen 15 to 30 minutes before sun exposure and 30 minutes after exposure begins. Reapply after swimming or sweating.

Infants Under 6 Months

Apply minimal amount of 15 SPF to small areas, such as the infant’s face and the back of the hands. Dress infants in lightweight clothes that cover legs, arms and include a hat that shades the face.

Children

The best line of defense is clothing coverage, hat and sunglasses. Limit outdoor play during peak hours. Apply enough sunscreen (one ounce per sitting) and reapply every two hours or after swimming or sweating.

Use extra caution near water, sand or snow, reflection may cause sunburn to develop more quickly.

Seek Emergency Medical Care If

Sunburn forms blisters or is extremely painful

The child experiences facial swelling

The sunburn covers a large area

The child has fever or chills after extreme sun exposure

The child has headache, confusion or a feeling of faintness

You see signs of dehydration (increased thirst or dry eyes & mouth)

We encourage smart and active sun protection year round not only to guard against skin cancer, but to keep your skin looking young and healthy. We offer sunscreen for men and women, moisturizers with sunscreen and Jane Iredale Mineral make-up with sun screen.

Tanning beds might seem like a great way to make your skin golden without exposure to harmful UV rays. However, artificial tanning comes with many dangers.

Misconceptions About Tanning Beds

Tanning beds are not 100% safe. Ample evidence shows that the UVA light used in tanning beds is as harmful as the rays which come from the sun.

There are two types of UV light: UVA & UVB. UVB stimulates the production of vitamin D and can cause your skin to tan or burn relatively quickly. In contrast, UVA does not stimulate vitamin D and takes much longer to promote tanning or burning. Unlike UVB, UVA rays penetrate deeper into your skin and can have dangerous side-effects.

These side-effects can include cancerous and non-cancerous melanomas, premature aging of the skin, squamous cell carcinoma, and even immune system suppression.

Healthy Exposure To UVB Rays & Sun Based Skin Care

The best way to ensure that your skin is not damaged from prolonged exposure to harmful UV rays is to moderate your time in direct sunlight. Many doctors recommend 10-15 minutes of exposure to direct sunlight per day for your skin to produce a healthy amount of vitamin D.

We recommend taking extra caution and avoid direct sun between 10am and 3pm. The risk of burning drops considerably before 10am and after 3pm.

If you are unable to moderate your time in the sun, make sure you are drinking enough water to keep your skin hydrated. We recommend drinking half of your body weight in ounces per day to keep your body properly hydrated in direct sunlight.

Next, you should make sure that you’re consuming enough high quality fat to provide your body with the materials it needs to build strong cell membranes. It’s important to consume a balanced amount of omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids as well as a sufficient amount of saturated fat. Despite what you may have hears, saturated fat is not the cause of heart disease.

Great sources of saturated fats are avocados, walnuts, almonds, coconut, and olives.

Proper Sunscreens & Sunscreen Applications

Exposure to UVA rays accounts for almost ninety-percent of the symptoms from premature skin aging. This statistic alone shows us that the most important skin care product is sunscreen. There are many sunscreens on the market, but few actually repel harmful ultra-violet radiation away from your skin. Dr Robinson’s compliment of skin care sunscreens have SPF ratings of at least 15 and contain Avobenzone, Titanium Dioxide, and Zinc Dioxide to help your skin defend itself from harmful UVA rays.

Most sunburns occur when sunscreen is present. This is typically due to an inadequate amount of sunscreen being applied before exposure to the sun. Typically, only 25-50% of what is necessary to block harmful UV rays is applied. Your skin cannot properly defend itself if only a quarter or half of the recommended amount is applied before prolonged exposure to the sun.

Additionally, 20-30 minutes is strongly recommended to allow the sunscreen to be properly absorbed by your skin, so it should be applied half-an-hour before long-term sun exposure. Sunscreen should be the last product applied before exposure to the sun.

Alternatives To Sun Based Tanning

If you are adamant about tanning this summer, spray tanning and self applied tanners are the safest method. Self tanners and bronzers have the darkening effect associated with sun-based tanning without the dangerous side effects.

Dr Robinson’s office carries a full range of healthy self-tanning products. Call or email us today for a free consultation on which product is right for you.

Spring is the time of year when we start assessing our legs to see if they are “shorts weather” ready. The typical leg complaints are shape, size, color and noticeable veins. Although we cannot alter the shape or size at Oswego Spa & Laser, we can treat and eliminate unsightly veins and recommend a great, sunless tanner to get you headed in the right direction.

The first thing to consider is whether the vessels are superficial in nature or is there an underlying vascular issue. The classifications are divided into large, bulging varicose veins, bluish feeder/reticular veins and spider veins. At Oswego Spa and Laser we specialize in the treatment of the small reticular veins using Sclerotherapy injections as well as the small to moderate spider veins using targeted laser therapies.

Sclerotherapy is a non-surgical treatment using injections to eliminate the appearance of cosmetic spider veins and small varicose veins of the legs.

First let’s talk about Sclerotherapy. By definition, Sclerotherapy is a nonsurgical treatment that involves injecting a medical grade solution into the vein, causing the lining of the vein wall to swell, stick together and ultimately seal shut. Once sealed, the flow of blood is stopped and scar tissue develops. Blood is then forced through healthier veins and the treated vein is absorbed. If a vein is large enough to be injected, this method is the most effective and efficient manner of treatment with most patients experiencing a 50-80% improvement.

Once the large reticular vessels and larger spider veins are treated with Sclerotherapy, the moderate to small spider veins can then be treated with a laser. The laser works by generating an intense beam of light that selectively heats up the hemoglobin in the red blood cells causing the destruction of the vein wall. Immediately you will see a darkening accompanied by slight swelling along the length of the vessels.

With both procedures you should avoid intense exercise for 24 to 72 hours, walking is encouraged. Compression stockings or wraps should be worn depending on the size of the veins treated. Easy to follow instructions are provided during the consultation to help you plan your exercise around the treatments, greatly maximizing the end results.

Summer is just around the corner so it’s not too early to get started on healthier and more attractive “shorts worthy” legs. Call us today at Oswego Spa and Laser to set up your complimentary consultation.

The staff at Oswego Spa & Laser, located in Lake Oswego, do not hesitate to “bat” their long thick eyelashes thanks to Latisse! Skeptics at first, we are all now proof that Latisse does work. Latisse is the first and only FDA approved prescription treatment for inadequate or not enough eyelashes. Our experience proved that regular nightly use will produce longer, thicker and darker lashes with noticeable results around 6 to 8 weeks.

If you are considering eyelash extensions or already have them, but are unhappy, Latisse is for you. You will save money and time with daily use of Latisse. Your lashes will look natural and not fake like some eyelash extensions.

The main ingredient in Latisse is bimatoprost ophthalmic solution, also used in the treatment of glaucoma. Although the bimatoprost strength (0.03%) in Latisse is far less than what is used for glaucoma treatment, you may have heard that using Latisse can cause iris pigmentation (browning). Chances of this happening when using Latisse as directed are slim, in fact you would need to pour Latisse directly into your eye every day over time for this discoloration to take place.

Dr. Lee Robinson, Medical Director of Oswego Spa & Laser, is a prescribing physician of Latisse in the Portland area. We recommend purchasing 2 Latisse Kits that will give you 8 to 12 weeks of everyday use resulting in lashes that are long and full. Oswego Spa & Laser offers special pricing on the purchase of 2 Latisse kits. Combine this special price with the $20 rebate available for those who sign up for “Lash Perks” on the Latisse website and you are on your way to affordable luscious lashes.

Oswego Spa & Laser, under the direction of Dr. Lee Robinson, has put together a simple guide for easy skin care and anti-aging treatments that will get you on the road to enjoying healthier skin, people will notice.

We’re not against a laugh line or two, and no one can change genetics (yet!). However, there are many ways to promote a healthy appearance and protect your skin from damaging factors that contribute to facial wrinkles, sagging skin and overall signs of aging.

Meet with an Esthetician: A complementary consultation with an esthetician from Oswego Spa & Laser is well worth your time. A 30 minute consultation will give you information needed to choose the best product for your skin type. Our estheticians are understanding and sensitive to any apprehension you may feel. They will create an easy affordable program designed to get you results.

Keep it Clean: Men have larger pores and approximately 15% oiler skin than women which means male skin gets dirtier. It is very important to clean your face every day with a facial cleanser suited for your skin type. Do not use a deodorant soap. Cleansing twice a day is ideal, but for those in a hurry to get out the door in the morning we recommend a deep cleansing before bed.

Keep it Toned: As skin ages, it needs to work harder to maintain it’s elasticity. Toners with glycolic or alpha hydroxy acids work the best for toning the face. These acids actually reduce the pore size, and help avoid ingrown hairs. The right toner will balance the pH in your facial skin which allows moisturizer and sun screen to penetrate better.

Treat Your Skin: Considering your skin type (oily, dry or combination) with the time of year, Oswego Spa & Laser offers different treatments and product to treat and enhance your skin. Our experienced estheticians provide instruction and are always available for questions.

Sun Protection: Protect yourself against harmful sun exposure by regularly using a long-lasting sun block of SPF 30 or higher and covering up when out in the sun for prolonged periods of time. Don’t forget your lips, find a balm that has an SPF of 15 or higher. Remember damaging UV rays are one of the leading causes of damaged skin and fine lines and skin cancers.

Dr. Lee Robinson, Facial Cosmetic Surgeon located in Lake Oswego Oregon and Medical Director of Oswego Spa & Laser wants men to realize the importance of good facial skin care. The first thing people notice about you is your face! Healthy skin is the most important element of a great looking face. Healthy younger looking skin is easy to achieve and we can show you available options. Here are a few facts to help you understand why it is important to take good care of your facial skin.

Thicker Skin: Facial skin is thicker for men than women. Higher levels of testosterone in the blood create thicker dermis and epidermis skin layers which contain more elastin and collagen. This means a man’s resistance to aging skin (fine lines, wrinkles, skin laxity and large pores) is higher than a woman’s.

Oilier Skin: With thicker facial skin, men also have more active oil-producing sebaceous glands (sebum) that continue producing oil late into life (women decrease oil production about 20 years sooner than men). These natural oils are waterproof and protect the skin to keep it soft, smooth and supple.

Coarser, Thicker Hair: Men have coarse, thick hair on their faces, requiring constant facial shaving resulting in a higher risk of irritation and ingrown hairs.

Larger Pores: Pumping out natural oils and sprouting hair, men’s pores are larger than a women’s, which increases the risk of having clogged pores and acne blemish outbreaks.

Lifestyles: Men tend to spend more time outside causing frequent expose to the sun and environmental pollutants.

For men who like a cleanly shaved face, the task of daily shaving can at times seem monotonous. Often men will rush through it or give a poor effort. Shaving should be done carefully from beginning to end. Most men have a preference on how they shave electric vs. razor, shaving cream vs. gel and never considering another option. If you suffer from nicks, cuts, razor burn or razor bumps it’s time for a change. Electric razors are less likely to irritate than blades, but if you prefer a blade, choose a single or double blade razor.

Shaving Hints:

Rinsing your beard area with warm water before shaving will help soften your beard.

Apply a shaving cream that has a high concentration of lubricants and moisturizers.

Use a sharp blade to ensure a smooth shave without irritation.

Always shave in the direction of your beard growth.

Avoid using aftershave lotions that contain alcohol.

Finish with a moisturizer that contains sun screen.

Don’t forget the eyebrows! Waxing and shaping are a must.

More men are realizing the importance of good skin care and find that regular facials help keep their facial skin supple and healthy, the condition needed for daily shaving.
