You likely already know that botulinum toxin type A, Botox, is an effective injectable that inhibits the muscle contractions that lead to expression wrinkles that may become permanent. Botox injected into the face will decrease forehead and frown lines and wrinkles around the eyes for about three or four months before it needs to be repeated.

You probably also know that Botox is often injected into the underarms, palms and soles of the feet to stop excessive sweating by paralyzing the sweat glands. But Botox has become a multipurpose medication that has many applications—both aesthetic and general health-related. Here are five other ways Botox can be used:

Eyebrow makeover

Injecting the area above a droopy brow with Botox lifts the brow into a more youthful position and stops the muscles from pulling the brow down. Injecting Botox near the temples may create a more natural-looking brow, rather than brows that arch too high—a tell-tale sign that someone has been “over-injected.”

Smaller calves

Used off-label, Botox can cause lower-leg muscles to atrophy a bit, which minimizes large, bulky-looking calves.

Migraine relief

It’s not clear how it works, but Botox injections may desensitize the pain receptors that lead to debilitating, chronic migraine headaches. It’s injected in several points around the head in 12-week intervals. And it’s FDA approved for this use.

Breast lift

It’s been a controversial subject, but Botox has been used off-label on the bust line as a temporary solution for droopiness. The pectoral muscles can pull on the shoulders and cause sagging, yet Botox injections cause those muscles to relax so the shoulders don’t slouch and the breasts are lifted.

Muscle spasms Small doses of Botox may help people who suffer from intense muscles spasms, like those with clinched fists, uncontrollable blinking or muscle twitches, because of its ability to calm the muscle.

Wrinkle prevention

We usually associate Botox with an older generation who want to reverse wrinkles, but more young people are getting the injections to actually prevent the development of wrinkles by stopping the frowning or squinting that leads to them. In fact, reality TV star Kim Kardashian admitted to Botox injections before she turned 30. Be sure to thoroughly discuss the range of wrinkle-preventing options with your dermatologist or plastic surgeon before opting for the most expensive or invasive treatment.

Check out the video and follow the instructions below to get the look!

Apply PurePressed Blush in Tawny, or your favorite shade, to your cheeks using the Dome brush.

Apply Citrine Mystikol to your bottom lash line, and top if desired.

Tap the bottom of Gold 24K Gold Dust to release a little product into the cap.

Pick up your Gold 24K Gold Dust from the cap, using the Deluxe Shader brush and apply it to your eyelid using a pressing or patting motion. Try not to sweep or flick it across the lid or the gold dust will end up everywhere (unless you want a little all over shimmer).

Using the highlighter end of your Mystikol, apply to the inner corner of the eye and your brow bone, smooth out with ring finger if necessary.

Apply PureLash Extender and Conditioner followed by Jet Black PureLash Lengthening Mascara.

Finish the look with a holiday red lip by applying Passion Lip Fixation topped with Chili Pepper Chocoholicks.

To wear this look during the day, just wear Chili Pepper Chocoholicks, then add Passion Lip Fixation for your evening look. Now you’re all ready to go from the office to your party in under a minute!

Women love doing everything together from visiting the nail salon to hitting the gym, but when it comes to aesthetic treatments, you shouldn’t subscribe to a group mentality at the risk of your health.

“I would be wary of any type of ‘pumping’ or injection party,” says La Jolla, CA, plastic surgeon Robert Singer, MD. “It violates so many safety standards and puts patients at risk unnecessarily.”

Fillers or injectables may not have the same risks as more extensive treatments, but they are still medical procedures that have potential complication. It’s a bad decision to treat a cosmetic procedure as a party favor, and, according to Dr. Singer, here’s why:

1 — You often don’t know the full background or expertise of the individual performing the procedure—he or she may not even be a physician. You should have fillers performed only by appropriately trained plastic surgeons or dermatologists in a medical office.

2 — There is no customization of treatment. “Without thorough evaluations and patient charts, how can the individual doing the injections be sure of how to appropriately treat a patient?” Dr. Singer says. You can’t be certain what materials are being used. “We’ve seen everything from silicone and paraffin to oils (which aren’t safe) being used as injection materials,” Dr. Singer says. These materials are also frequently injected in a nonsterile manner, which has led to infection, he adds.

3 — A party isn’t the right atmosphere for medical procedures. “Oftentimes, there is alcohol involved and that dramatically increases chances for serious problems and negates any informed consent about the treatment, which is rarely given in those settings,” Dr. Singer says. If you are undergoing a procedure, you want the undivided attention of the medical provider without the potential distractions of a party.

4 — There is no protocol in place to handle emergencies. “What will happen if someone has an allergic reaction that requires immediate medical care?” Dr. Singer asks. If you have the misfortune to have an adverse reaction or complication from a “pumping” party injectable, your injector may not be qualified or experienced in the treatment of your problem.

If it sounds like a bargain and “too good to be true,” it usually is.

Winter means your skin is going to dry out fast — be prepared

Keep a styled haircut stylish by substituting a hood for a hat.

Avoid hot showers and add a humidifier to your home.

It’s freezing outside. But it’s hot as hell inside. Translation: the perfect storm for dandruff-ridden scalp, lips with hanging chads and skin so dry you could scratch a legible cry for help on it. So what’s the well-groomed guy to do in the dead of winter? Hunker down, gentlemen. It’s time to revamp your routine with a little help from our seasonally inspired list of dos and don’ts.

Do – Exfoliate

Despite the frigid temps, your skin still needs to be exfoliated. A basic face and body cleanser with finely ground grit will slough off old skin cells and reveal new, moisture-rich ones. Scrub down two to three times a week (irregularity can end up just stressing your skin out) and follow with a healthy dose of moisturizer to get your skin through winter’s darkest days.

Don’t – Take Scorching Showers

A long, hot shower to warm you up from the frigid temps can be tempting, but it’s also the quickest way to rob your skin of moisture. Steam created by the shower signals pores to open and release precious water from the body, leaving behind dry, itchy skin and dandruff on the scalp. A seemingly innocent respite from the cold? Perhaps not. So, limit yourself to six minutes, set the temp to somewhere around lukewarm and finish with a cold rinse on your head for flake-free hair.

Do – Use a Hooded Jacket

Whether it’s a zip-up, a pull-over or attached to your go-to winter gear, use a hood to protect your head from the elements. You’ll be targeting your body’s primary point of heat loss while caring for your perfectly positioned coif. You know, the kind that could be bulldozed down by stuffing it into a head-hugging ski hat.

Don’t – Go Grizzly

Just because the mercury has taken a dive doesn’t mean you should insulate yourself with extra layers of locks and a grotty beard. Stick to regularly scheduled programming — a shave about every three days and a haircut at least every four weeks — and let your down coat do the warming.

Do – Avoid Processed Food

After a month of holiday dinner table gorging and office snacking, your body could use a rest. All those fatty foods and sweets can result in dull, tired-looking skin. Integrate lean proteins like fish with omega-3 acids into your diet. Your skin and that obligatory New Year’s weight-loss resolution will thank you.

Don’t – Lick Lips

Contrary to instinct, quenching your thirsty lips with saliva will only make matters worse. Grease them up (and regrease them throughout the day) with an oil-based balm in order to stave off cracks, cuts and those unsightly hanging chads.

Do – Use A Humidifier

Indoor heating systems and space heaters certainly take the chill out of the air. But they suck the moisture out of it, which can leave your skin parched and itchy. Rather than bathing in body cream, treat the problem at its source by investing in a humidifier. Placing a few throughout your living space will help restore water to the air and to your skin.

Don’t – Use Understated Aromas

Light fragrances are too flimsy for the cold. Take advantage of the season by swapping your citrusy cologne for something a bit bolder. Spicy, woody ones with base notes of tobacco, oak, vetiver, and patchouli are your best bests for weathering the winter months in scented style.

Winter Solace

Treat the abnormal head position and neck pain that happens with cervical dystonia (CD) in adults.

To treat abnormal spasm of the eyelids (blepharospasm) in adults who have had prior treatment with onabotulinumtoxinA (Botox®).

What is Xeomin®

Xeomin is a botulinum toxin that is used to treat adults with cervical dystonia and blepharospasm. It has been used around the world since 2005 and was introduced to the US market in 2010 by Merz Pharmaceuticals, LLC.

What Is Botulinum Toxin

Botulinum toxin is a naturally occurring protein produced by the bacteria Clostridium botulinum. Botulinum toxin type A—the active ingredient in XEOMIN—is produced commercially from C. botulinum serotype A.

How Does Xeomin Work?

Xeomin is injected into muscles to decrease their activity. Xeomin blocks the release of a chemical messenger—acetylcholine—that conveys the signal from nerve terminals and causes muscle fibers to contract. Not all terminals are affected by botulinum toxin, so the muscles can still contract, just less forcefully.

This allows the muscles to contract more normally.

Are All Botulihum Toxin Products The Same?

Not all botulinum toxin products are the same. This is reflected in the unique names for each product. The dose of XEOMIN may be different from other botulinum toxin products.

How Is Xeomin Made?

In nature, C. botulinum produces the toxin in association with accessory proteins (toxin complex). Merz takes the toxin complex and employs a proprietary manufacturing process that isolates the therapeutic component and removes the accessory proteins to produce Xeomin.

Original information can be found at xeomin.com

Part of every woman’s makeup repertoire should be the perfect red lip. Here is a guest post by Marie Lavinio one of our awesome personal shoppers at shop.janeiredale.com on her experience finding the perfect red lip.

Red Lips are in. They are sexy, sultry, seductive. Oh, those ruby reds of Marilyn, Angelina, and ScarJo. Red lips shout, “Look at me, I’m beautiful, confident, and ready to rule the world.” Red is elegant, versatile, classic. And the good news is: we can all wear red lipstick!

Red lips began when ancient Egyptian women embellished their lips with henna. In Japan geisha girls painted their faces stark white and their lips bright red in contrast as a symbol of beauty. It is part of our world culture to wear red to attract a mate, to lift our spirits, to feel naturally confident.

I never thought that I could wear red lips. In fact, I’ve tried unsuccessfully in the past with other makeup brands. I am fair with yellow undertones, some freckles, have light brown hair, golden highlights, and hazel eyes. I wear Liquid Minerals in Bisque and have chosen pink-brown colors for my lips most of my adult life. Then our Naturally Confident Fall Collection arrived at shop jane iredale. LipFixation in Passion immediately caught my eye.

It was so amazingly red! First of all, I must tell you that I have some of the thinnest lips on the planet, so I adore LipFixation. It is the only lip stain and plumper that has ever worked for me. It not only plumps my lips, but it also feels silky smooth and is long lasting. It’s a miracle for me: when I wear it, I look as if I have a new pair of lips. So when I saw that Passion was a new LipFixation, I was excited, but a little frightened. Red? No, I don’t think I can wear it, I kept telling myself. I look really terrible in red.

After seeing how gorgeous some my fellow personal shoppers looked in Passion, I was beginning to get jealous. But they had skin tones that were so unlike mine. Olive skin or pink undertones, or pink and yellow undertones together. Unlike mine.

Knowing that red was the color of the season and that I was going to be left unnoticed if I didn’t try it out, I decided to be courageous. I took the tube from its package, pulled the applicator from its cherry red compartment and used the three-dot method in applying it to my lips, so I would get the “less is more” coverage. I gently dotted the applicator tip in three places across my bottom lip from end to end.

Next I smoothed it with my ring finger across my lip. I repeated the same method on my top lip, keeping my lips apart. I let my lips dry for just a few seconds and then applied the clear lip gloss to my lips for a shiny, luscious look. Did I dare look at myself close up…in RED? Well, I did, gradually getting closer and closer to the mirror. I loved the results! Who was that woman I was looking at in the mirror?

Wow, she looked different. More confident, sophisticated, sassy. As I turned around to show my co-workers, they complimented me on how well I looked in red. What a surprise! Next time I’ll try applying Passion using the applicator tip in one fell swoop across my lips for more coverage. There’s no stopping me now!

Passion is a classic cherry red that works on me just as well as on every woman, no matter what her skin tone. A universal red! Don’t be afraid to try it. One thing for sure—Passion will never go out of style.
